Large parts of the 25,000 sqm building have been listed since 1976, and have been preserved in a way that harmonizes well with new modern conditions. Sustainable materials such as Norwegian marble, granite and brick have been used during the renovation, while historical details such as frescoes have been updated. The building was designed by two of Norway's most famous architects, Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson, who also designed the huge chandelier that hangs through 7 floors
