BREEAM
Learn more about BREEAM as a method and classification tool for planning projects, infrastructure and buildings.
What is BREEAM?
BREEAM is a world-leading method and rating tool for sustainability assessment for master planning of projects, infrastructure and buildings.
Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is not only the world leader but also the most widely used environmental classification system for buildings.
The tool recognizes and reflects the value of higher-performing assets across the life cycle of the property. The purpose of the method is to motivate all actors in the construction industry to carry out sustainable design and construction all the way – from the early construction phase to the delivered building.
"BREEAM-certified developments are more sustainable environments that improve the well-being of the people who live and work in them, help protect natural resources and provide more attractive real estate investments."
BREEAM-certification
BREEAM In-Use International is a management tool and an international certification system for use in existing buildings, which can help owners and managers reduce operating costs, energy consumption and environmental impact in existing commercial buildings and homes.
A BREEAM certificate is issued in five different levels (Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Outstanding) and is based on documented environmental performance in nine different categories:
- Health and indoor environment
- Management
- Water
- Materials
- Waste
- Transportation
- Energy
- Contamination
- Land use and ecology
More sustainable environments that care for people and nature
The certificate is issued through a third-party certification by an approved auditor.
This means that BREEAM-certified developments are more sustainable environments that improve the well-being of the people who live and work in them, as well as help protect natural resources and provide more attractive real estate investments.
Norwegian Property’s goal in its sustainability strategy is to BREEAM in use certify existing buildings and achieve the grade minimum Very Good. We started with our property on Snarøyveien 36. The building was certified on June 8, 2020 and achieved the grade Excellent. Work is ongoing on BREEAM in use certifying buildings in the portfolio.
Two buildings in the portfolio were BREEAM-certified after rehabilitation: The “Administrasjonsbygget” was BREEAM-certified Very Good in November 2015. The office part of the “Terminalbygget” at Aker Brygge achieved the Very Good grade in March 2016.

As part of our sustainability strategy, we aim to achieve a grade of at least 'Very Good' in BREEAM certifications for our buildings. We have several buildings at Aker Brygge that are certified.
